However, this occasion comes for Palestinian journalists amid an unprecedented tragic reality, where the free word has become a target of the Israeli occupation, and journalistic work has turned into a daily risk threatening the lives of journalists and media professionals.

According to information issued by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, the number of Palestinian journalists and media workers killed has reached 262 since the beginning of the war on the Gaza Strip, in addition to hundreds of wounded and dozens detained or missing. This constitutes one of the highest recorded tolls globally in the targeting of journalists during armed conflicts. This figure reflects not only the scale of human loss, but also reveals a systematic pattern of targeting those who seek to convey the truth and expose violations.

The targeting of journalists—whether through direct killing, arrest, or the destruction of media institutions—constitutes a grave breach of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, which guarantee the protection of civilians, including journalists, during armed conflicts. Such acts may amount to war crimes, requiring accountability and an end to impunity.

Al-Dameer emphasizes that the Palestinian journalist today does not merely report events, but lives through their painful details—working under bombardment, losing colleagues and family members, and continuing their mission amid a lack of protection and resources. The camera has become a targeted witness, and the free voice and image are treated as punishable offenses in an attempt to obscure the truth and conceal the suffering of the Palestinian people from the world.

In this context, international silence regarding these violations undermines the human rights system and weakens the credibility of the principles that the international community is supposed to uphold. Accordingly, Al-Dameer affirms that the protection of journalists is not optional, but rather a legal and moral obligation under international law, and calls for:

The immediate provision of international protection for Palestinian journalists and ensuring freedom of journalistic work without intimidation or targeting.

The opening of an independent international investigation to hold the Israeli occupation authorities accountable for targeting journalists.

Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights – Gaza<br
