Al-Dameer Conducts Field Visit to Khan Younis Rehabilitation and Correction Center (Asdaa) and Examines the Conditions of Detainees and the Challenges They Face
Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights – Gaza conducted a field inspection visit yesterday, Monday, 10 August 2026, to the Khan Younis Rehabilitation and Correction Center (Asdaa), as part of its ongoing follow-up on the conditions of detainees and inmates and its efforts to assess the extent to which they enjoy their basic rights and the conditions of their detention.
During the visit, the Association’s delegation met with the center’s administration, where they discussed the current situation of the center and the challenges it faces amid the difficult humanitarian and economic conditions affecting the Gaza Strip, and the resulting shortage of resources and capacities necessary to provide the basic needs of inmates.
The center’s administration explained that the available resources remain limited and do not meet the rights of inmates due to the difficult security situation. It also faces difficulties in providing basic needs, particularly those related to food, water, electricity, healthcare, and daily necessities for the 195 inmates currently detained at the center from all governorates of the Gaza Strip. The administration affirmed that it is doing its utmost to provide for the needs of inmates within the available resources.
The Association’s delegation also met with the person responsible for legal affairs at the center and reviewed the legal situation of the inmates, detention procedures and judicial follow-up, in addition to mechanisms for communication with lawyers and the families of inmates.
As part of the visit, Al-Dameer lawyers inspected a number of inmates’ rooms and the internal facilities of the center and directly listened to a number of inmates regarding their conditions and daily needs. The testimonies heard reflected the existence of challenges related to living conditions, hygiene, water, food, healthcare, and overcrowding, in addition to other needs that require attention and follow-up by the competent authorities.
Al-Dameer Association affirms that persons deprived of their liberty retain all their human rights, and that detention conditions must respect their dignity, safety, and basic needs. Accordingly, it calls on the responsible authorities and all local and international institutions to work to address the challenges facing the Khan Younis Rehabilitation and Correction Center (Asdaa), provide the necessary resources and capacities to ensure humane and appropriate detention conditions, and improve the level of basic services provided to inmates.
